German universities, as is the case all over the world, have broad networks of international partners. Through cooperation programs among higher education institutions, DAAD supports German universities in expanding these networks.
For DAAD, the end of the funding period is the beginning of a long-standing relationship with its alumni. Our goal is to strengthen the DAAD alumni network by supporting the formation of alumni clubs, e.g. through various programs and activities.

Guten Tag! I’m Simona, a senior at Columbia University in New York, studying sociology. I’m excited to take over the DAAD instagram and share some photos from my time in Berlin (and adventures around Germany)— some of the most adventurous, insightful, and memorable months of my life! 🇩🇪🥨
While my family is from the Netherlands, my school’s Dutch course didn’t fit into my schedule. So instead, I opted to fill my language requirement with German—and I am so grateful I made this decision!
Over the past few years, I have found such an incredible community in my school’s German department. It was these strong connections and newly sparked interests in German intellectual theory that motivated me to study abroad in Berlin last semester.
My time in Germany taught me lessons in school and in life. Not only did my language skills improve immensely as I conversed with locals in and outside the city, but I felt inspired to take many German values and lifestyles back home. And, of course, I enjoyed lots of delicious Wurst. :)
Studying sociology and politics in some of the most historically relevant sites was such a unique learning experience, and even strengthened my interest in using my sociology degree in a global field. I am ecstatic to serve as a young Ambassador for DAAD, so that I can help encourage other students to find academic opportunities in Germany equally rewarding as my own.
